What do I need for larger Shelly installations?

Most private or domestic Shelly installations don't require anything more than installing the Shelly devices themselves and connecting them to your home network. However, for larger Shelly installations, there are a few considerations to make sure everything runs smoothly and stays easy to manage.

  • A Good Quality Router

While a Shelly network doesn't require a top-of-the-line router to function, it's advisable to purchase a dependable router that's able to handle many simultaneous clients and WiFi connections. This helps to ensure a reliable connection for each device.

  • Strong WiFi signal

Even with a good quality router, WiFi coverage can sometimes be inconsistent throughout a property, especially if the space is large or doesn't offer many lines of sight to the router. If WiFi signal is patchy, pair the router with some access points or WiFi extenders to increase the connection strength of the Shelly devices.

  • Static IP addresses

Manually assigning your devices an IP address from their interface leads to easier management of your Shelly network, preventing IP duplication and keeping the IP addresses the same in case you change routers.

  • Dedicated IoT network

It’s a good idea to make a dedicated 2.4 GHz IoT network for your Shelly devices as it facilitates easier communication between your Shelly network, keeps your data more secure, and makes it easier to control fixed IP addresses. Shelly devices can only work on the 2.4 GHz spectrum, so if your router is dual-band it’s also a good idea to disable 5 GHz for your Shelly IoT network.
